The drive: across the peninsula on I-95 and I-4
We head north out of Lake Worth on I-95, cut inland on I-4 through the center of the state, and roll into the Tampa Bay area roughly 200 miles later. It is a clean two-interstate route, and because it is a day trip we load at first light to beat the summer heat and the afternoon thunderstorms that build over the interior.

What is different on the Gulf coast
The Gulf side runs a little warmer and stickier in summer, with the same June-to-November wet season and an Atlantic-and-Gulf hurricane watch. Tampa’s housing leans toward bungalows in the older urban neighborhoods and sprawling master-planned subdivisions in the suburbs, a change from Lake Worth’s tile-roof CBS ranches and oceanfront high-rises.
